Hypocrite of the Week

As this column is being written, there is considerable pressure to arrest Mayor Zenaida Moya after an audit has turned up more than a quarter million dollars missing from CitCo coffers in just the first four months of 2009. So by the time this paper hits the streets, Mayor Moya may very well be Belize’s Jailbird of the Week, but that possibility notwithstanding, the very wealthy sea-side mansion owning ‘servant’ of the Belizean people has earned in stunning fashion the title of Hypocrite of the Week.

Who will ever forget the golden girl Zenaida Moya, who earned recognition in 2005 while marching down city streets with placard in hand, sweaty and red-faced and attired in grungy t-shirt and jeans? Who will ever forget her cries for transparency and accountability and an end to corruption while marching shoulder to shoulder with her union brothers and sisters? Who will ever forget her passionate proclamation that she would give up government life and all her benefits and stride penniless into service of her ‘beloved Belizeans?’

Zenaida Moya of 2005 and Zenaida Moya of 2009 are two completely different creatures. The only explanation is that the 2005 version was a liar and a hypocrite and cared not one whit for service of Belizeans, but only for service of self. There is no other explanation for the multi-million dollar seafront mansion after only a few years in office. There is no other explanation for the jet-setting around the globe while the residents she vowed to serve are forced to languish in the filth of the city. There is no other explanation for the allegations of mismanagement, misappropriation and corruption with which the Mayor has been bombarded for more than a year.

From the golden girl of Belize, Zenaida Moya has been reduced to no more than an opportunist, a hustler and a thief in the eyes of many Belizeans. Those who have eyes to see will surely agree that the Mayor pulled the wool over the eyes of so many who believed in her. Those who have mouths to speak will surely proclaim, along with us all, that the Mayor is a hypocrite beyond compare. Her hypocrisy is compounded only by her continued calling upon God as her guiding light even as money continues to flow out of City Council coffers and she continues to live the life of the rich and infamous.
