Dear Editor,
Wouldn’t it be surprising if one day you’d be watching the news and there wouldn’t be any report of a crime? Acts of crime and violence have surged, especially in recent months. According to the Guardian newspaper dated October 4, 2009 Commissioner Crispin Jeffries reported that 6,147 crimes have been reported; 2,567 are major crimes like robbery, murder, burglary, theft, rape and carnal knowledge. There have been 2,807 cases of other crimes.
Even in the political scene there is crime happening. Let’s take for example the “under deposit” at the Belize City Council. To be honest, we really thought that our new government would make a change and be really transparent, but we guess talk is cheap. If we are trying to lower the crime rate in our country, then we need prominent and honest examples.
If we can’t even get help from our political leaders because they are as bad as the criminals then our country will be suffering really badly in the years to come. We need to get together as a country to help lower crime rates. This requires assistance from everybody (parents, teachers, Police, churches) and especially our Ministers and Prime Minister because they are all leaders in our community.
Thank you for listening to what we as Belizeans have to say.
