Dear Editor,

Belize, a wonderful country known for its diverse cultures, is referred to as a safe country, but in reality this tranquil haven of democracy is being attacked by a great surge of crime that is as a result of isolated attempts to address this matter. In Belize there is a massive increase in crime rates; don’t you think that for every good there’s a bad?

There are several factors that contribute to crimes in Belize. These include poverty, neglect, drugs, gangs and the lack of parental advice. Crime is used as a means of satisfying basic needs and wants. Due to the increasing number of crimes, insecurity has begun to reign and will continue tormenting citizen’s minds, especially if this matter isn’t addressed.

In an effort to reduce the crime rate in Belize, the government should, first of all, set an example to follow. Also there should be an enhancement in the security forces so that they work together and then citizens will fear the consequences of the laws and so, avoid being involved in criminal activities. Defense forces should work as a team in doing more patrols, investigations and raids; rather than working in isolation and not achieving their objectives. The society should work in unity as one nation, however such is life, the innocent pay for the bad and death doesn’t  discriminate between face, age, sex nor race.
