The Chief Justice of Belize, Dr. Abdulai Conteh, has issued another landmark ruling against the UDP’s vile and vindictive policy of wantonly firing individuals because of their suspected support for the opposition People’s United Party. Comparable to the indiscriminate termination of Ms. Sharole Saldivar from the Belize City Council, Mr. Ulric Willoughby also fell victim to an unjustified firing from his post as Town Administrator for the Dangriga Town Council in March of 2006.

The arbitrary firing of Mr. Willoughby came at the hands of well-known UDP personality and then UDP Mayor, Frank “Papa” Mena.  Adding further insult to injury, the UDP Town Council was so hell-bent on dismissing Mr. Willoughby that they even fabricated grounds of misconduct against him in an attempt to avoid having to pay damages to Mr. Willoughby for wrongfully terminating him.  However, at the end of the day, justice would prevail as Frank “Papa” Mena and the UDP Council failed miserably in trying to discredit the humble and steadfast Ulric Willoughby.  The Chief Justice declared that the dismissal was wrongful and ordered the UDP Dangriga Town Council to pay damages and costs to Mr. Willoughby.

The Belize Times spoke with Willoughby’s attorney, Mr. Kareem Musa, who stated that “this decision serves as just another signal to government that victimizing honest, hard-working Belizeans on the basis of suspected party affiliation cannot and should never be tolerated”.

That we are living under an unjust regime is plain for all to see.   We need not look too far into the past to recall the loose-cannon Minister, Patrick Faber, openly confessing to the media that he fired Ms. Hirian Good on the sole basis that she was a suspected supporter of the People’s United Party.

This new brand of politics as predicated by the UDP government has showcased the fact that UDP politicians like Faber have absolutely no respect for the citizens of Belize, and for that they can rest assured that they will have no future in representing this nation ever again.  They wear their cold and callous behavior on their sleeves and are proud to say that they couldn’t care less about the livelihoods of hard-working Belizeans who have contributed tremendously to the development and growth of our nation.

It about time someone did something about this type of situation in Belize. Religion, party affiliation, or your sexual orientation should have nothing to do with your employment, to loose your job because of any of these is discrimination. You employment should be base on your performance alone and nothing else. Your political party, religion and sexual orientation should not be discussed in the office these are all private matter that should not be discussed at work. It is such a shame that this is still happening in Belize. You should not get hired because of your party affiliation, you should be hired based on your qualification. WAKE UP BELIZEAN THIS IS 2009.
