Victimization as a Public Administration Issue

The laws of Belize dictate that elections be held every five years to elect representatives who will go on to form our government.  The duty of our government is to plan a direction for the future of our country and then pass legislation to implement these plans.  I must emphasize that their role is, or at least should be, purely policy oriented; but as we know all too well, this is not the case.

The public sector functions as the machinery through which government conducts the business of the country.  It implements the policies that are formulated by our leaders and enforces them; thus ensuring the smooth operations of our country.  As policy makers, it is understandable that our elected government officials need to have people they can trust working directly with them, but it is a total travesty when these officials find it necessary to replace those public servants who work in the trenches; making sure children cross the street safely and do other jobs of the sort.

As the guardians of our fundamental rights and freedoms, I would like to think that our elected officials are aware that ALL BELIZEANS are granted under Part 3, Sec. 3 of The Constitution of Belize – the supreme law of the land – the “freedom of conscience, of expression, and of assembly and association.”  I would like to remind these representatives the work that they were elected to do, and it does not include the micromanagement of the public service!  Remember that you were elected by the people of Belize to serve the people of Belize.  We are all one people with one common interest, the success and prosperity of our nation and all Belizeans alike.

Long live Belize!

Sincerely,

Robert Robinson
