Exposed: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Young

On July 14, 2010, the private citizen action group who bravely and fearlessly wear the badge – as well as the target – of being Belizeans for Justice (BFJ), were forced to postpone the press conference they had planned. BFJ is made up of fed up citizens who are convinced that they must put down their foot. The majority of its members are grieving single mothers, whose sons have been victims of street violence.

Founder, Yolanda Shakron, explained to Channel 7, that the primary purpose of the Press Conference was to battle the issue of crime, violence and justice and particularly, as she put it specifically, to demand the removal of top cop, Chrispin Jefferies.

Ms. Shakron, not known to pull any punches, was very clear that the problems the feisty and admirable group were facing, may even be coming from under this very Police Department that Jefferies has at his command:”… I can’t pinpoint but I think it’s from within the police department because I believe that they know that we were going to have this press conference and they knew that, you know, we were going to be asking for the removal of Mr. Jeffries.”

What stung us at Belize Times was an undercover UDP character who pitched on the meeting of the sincere group.  Imagine that in the actual press conference defiantly held on July 19, 2010 Michael Young stood up and spoke as if he agreed with the group. As reported by Channel 5, he held himself out as being “in solidarity with the group”. In fact, he said: “Efforts like this must be supported” and “I agree with you. we have this country, we are at war, we either got to be cowards or we will stand up and fight. And as usual in Belize the women are the ones that stand up before the men.”

That is what Young said in the conference in front  the face of the single mothers who were there to call for Commissioner Jefferies head and badge.

But then a few minutes later behind their backs listen to Young again: “…And in their view, they feel that he should be removed. It doesn’t mean that the government must go and remove the commissioner because it is a very difficult situation.”

This is a full about turn from the position of the citizen group seconds earlier. In fact, Young seemed to criticize their position on removal as possibly not being “intelligent” or “sober”. He was even dismissive of it, and lumped the mothers in with the media: “Government needs to make its intelligent assessment of what is needed in this situation. It can’t just bend to even the media calling for someone’s head.”

We at Belize Times rewound the tape several times. So for emphasis and to avoid any doubt Young gave his personal view contrary to that of Belizeans for Justice and his previous support for that group seconds earlier: “… And I can say from my part that I have observed Crispin Jefferies and he is intelligent, he is a career police officer and he is determined in the fight against crime.”

All this after he, just moments and a few feet earlier, seemed to play along in their meeting.

Confused? Don’t be. This is the same big shirt attorney for the UDP whose law firm fought for the Government not to pay a single mother who the UDP had fired for unconstitutional political reasons. Remember the single mother, Sharole Saldivar, single mother fired by the UDP when she was at home being attended to for an illness? And this is the same UDP who acted as attorney for the United Democratic Party, when not yet expelled Zenaida Moya-Flowers accused “them” of bringing criminal charges against her while she was in the hospital giving birth to a child.

This is the way the UDP talk, this is a perfect example of the two mouthed way they operate. This is a downright shame and we at Belize Times will be nice and not use any words to describe Young’s confusing statements and actions. The single mothers will read this and realize. We are not sleeping and no matter how much words, Barrow, Singh or Young use. The UDP will always be frauds and hypocrites.
