The Asian community across Belize City today closed their doors for business as they mourn the senseless murder of Helen Yu, 14, the student from Edward P Yorke High was was shot dead last Thursday inside her family’s store on Iguana Street Extension in the Collet area. Yu was laid to rest today following a heart-wrenching service attended by her wounded father, Ziren, 41, who was also shot in the robbery, supported by friends from the wider Asian community resident in the beleaguered city.

The closure of the businesses, according to Peter Quan, Vice Chair of the Belize Chinese Association, was also to send a blistering message to law enforcement authorities and to the criminal element that the Asian community  has gotten enough of the rampant and undeterred attacks against them.

Coupled with the closure, the Belize Chinese Association is also offering a reward of between $5,000 and $10,000 for information that proves successful in the apprehension, arrest and conviction of the thieves who killed Yu and injured her father.  Information can be forwarded through the CrimeStopper hotline or to any Police Station.
