Malverne Rodriguez, 38, a security guard residing at 7 Black Orchid Street became an inmate of Belize Central Prison yesterday when he appeared in the #2 Magistrate’s Court and was charged with keeping a firearm and ammunition without a gun license.
Rodriguez pleaded not guilty to the charges but Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser explained to him that the court cannot offer him bail because of the nature of the offenses and he too was remanded into custody. He will reappear in Court on October 14th, 2010.
Rodriguez’s woes began as a result of an incident which occurred around 9:05 p.m. on Saturday, August 28th, 2010. The police were on mobile patrol on Cemetery Road when their attention were drawn to a tall man of brown complexion who was dressed in a white T-shirt with ¾ blue jeans pants. The police reported that when they approached the man whom they later identified as Rodriguez, he tried to run but they apprehended and searched him and found a black 9 mm Beretta pistol and a magazine which contained thirteen live rounds of 9mm ammunition. Consequently, Rodriguez was taken into custody and charged after he could not produce a license for the firearm.
