Boyarde Messenger’s revealing exhibit debuts Friday
Belize City, January 27th, 2011
A woman in love with “WOMAN”. That’s the best way to describe artist Boyarde Messenger whose art display, which debuts tomorrow at the Image factory, will do more than just open eyes.
The 30 year old British national says she has found a way of exalting women, and that’s through art. Having studied “post feminism” and photography, Messenger illuminates women through her body art and photography.
“I have always been fascinated with the female body. Through photography I want to show my own version of women empowerment,” she explained.
At the exhibit, Messenger will put on display a special volume of her work, 59 pieces in total, which includes nude photography, body art and paint, and night landscape photography.
Can you Belize it?
Among the 59 pieces of artwork on display, 58 of them are portraits and scenes taken in Belize. Messenger said she wasn’t expecting women in Belize to readily accept posing for nude and body art photos, and was totally surprised when they approached her willing to be a part of her work.
“Belize is very male dominated,” she commented.
Most of the photography taken in Belize has added to her success in Paris, Miami, New York, the United Kingdom and other parts of the world where she has held exhibits.
Messenger’s first encounter with Belize was in 2007 when she arrived to photograph a friend’s wedding in Placencia. Since then, she has fallen in love with the jewel, and visits every year, spending as much as seven months each time.
But this is the first time she has an exhibit in Belize.
Messenger’s exhibits opens at 7pm on Friday, January 28th, 2011 at the Image Factory.
