Belize City, Monday, December 5, 2011
The St Catherine’s Academy and Wesley College girls won through to the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) basketball championship finals, following victories in the playoffs and semifinals at the Belize City Center on Monday, December 5.
SCA girls made it to the finals by upsetting the 5-time national basketball champs, Gwen Lizarraga High School girls 19-15. Gilda Estrada led SCA with 11 points, Kursha Pollard added 5 points, Kafira Gill hit a jump-shot and Shantel Castillo added a free throw.
The SCA girls’ full-court press completely shut down Gwen Lizarraga’s star shooter Ann Ma, who was held to a miserly 2 points from the charity stripe. Deandra Coote led Gwen Liz with 5pts, while Kenya Brown and Reenya Gentle scored 4 points each.
The SCA girls anticipate no trouble in the finals as they also defeated the Wesley College girls 23-14 last Wednesday. Again Gilda Estrada led with 14 points, while Kursha Pollard added 5 points, and Kafira Gill and Chelsi Noralez tossed in a bucket each.
