Caye Caulker, Sunday, December 11, 2011
The Millennium Girls of Belize City are one game away from becoming the Belize District female football champions after they won game one on Sunday afternoon.
The Millennium team beat the Caye Caulker Island Stars at the Caye Caulker field 6-0, making it quite clear they are serious about business.
Kursha Pollard and Sheryann “Baby” Tracy led the Millennium girls’ offensive. The pressure of their attack proved too much for the Island Girls’ defense, who gave up a corner kick and Kursha Pollard made them pay the maximum penalty for an early 1-0 lead in the 1st half.
Lillian Joseph and Stephanie Duarte led the Island girls’ counterattack, but the tenacious Millennium defense led by veteran Adelma Broaster and Sarah Arzu, sweeper Melony Tasher and Latanya Gamboa shut them out the entire game. Millennium’s goalie Carlicia Petillo took care of all other challenges.
Pollard scored a 2nd goal with a cannonball shot when Millennium won another corner kick. The visitors then won a free kick and from 30 yards outside the goal, and Sarah Arzu unleashed a long-range cruise missile which had the game 3-0 at the half-time break.
In the 2nd half, a long lob from Arzu found Tracy, who razzle-dazzled the ball around 3 defenders and Maribel Dominguez to score the 4th goal. When the Island Stars rebuffed Sheryann’s next try, Arzu collected the rebound and sent it back through the crowd of players milling around in front of the goal. Dominguez did not see the ball until it was too late: 5-0.
Island Stars’ coach John Trejo pulled out all the stops as he made further changes, but the visitors’ came with a tough game plan. Pollard iced the victory cake with a bullet of a shot that completed her hat trick for a 6-0 win.
Game of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night at the MCC grounds, depending on the weather.
