Belize City, Sunday, December 18, 2011
The football veterans of the Kulture Yabra football club won the championship final of the Belize City over-40 football competition, 4-0 over Plaza United at the M.C.C. grounds on Sunday, December 18.
Norman “Tilliman” Pipersburgh proved he is still dangerous as he and Steve “Gellis” Young led the Yabra offensive with the help of Cecil Jones and Charlie Slusher on the wings, and David ”Manu” Macaulay Sr. and Gilbert Brown at midfield.
Plaza’s Benedict Lopez and Kenrick Velasquez tried to get an attack going with the help of Norman Bonnell, Barbie Gentle and Errol Wade, and they did get three shots at goal in the opening minutes of the ball game, but Yabra’s able goalkeeper Glen Arzu took care of these challenges, while the Yabra defenders, Felipo Alario, Merlin Diaz, George “Peely” James and Basil Milton locked up shop.
Cecil Jones kept alive a forward pass from Pipersburgh and found Steve Young who put the finish on the play for a 1-0 lead. Pipersburgh next unleashed a cannonball shot that goalkeeper Valentine Ferguson dived and managed to deflect.
The Plaza defenders would not contain Pipersburgh who on his next try unleashed a grassburner shot that Ferguson got down on his knees in vain. The light rain made it easier for the ball to slip right through Ferguson’s gloves and legs and into the back of the net: 2-0.
Slusher next brought the ball up the right flank and centered the ball to Pipersburgh who worked the ball past three defenders until he found an opening to blast in another shot. Again Ferguson dived for the save, but the ball slid right under his left armpit into the far corner of the goal as Kulture Yabra led 3-0 at intermission.
In the second half, Plaza refreshed their offensive and defensive lineups. Kulture Yabra won a corner kick, and David Macaulay connected with a shot that embarrassed Ferguson with a 4th goal before the final whistle. Yabra won two more free kicks, but Ferguson managed to stop Pipersburgh’s next shot though the wall of defenders and Charlie Slusher’s try went over the crossbar.
