The St Catherine’s Academy girls are the newly crowned queens of high school basketball after they won the secondary school basketball championship at the San Pedro High School auditorium over the weekend.
The championship game was between the SCA girls and Muffles College of Orange Walk Town. SCA led from the get-go, 2-1 in the 1st quarter and 7-3 at the half. Kursha Pollard added 7 points for a 14-8 lead by the end of the 3rd quarter. In money time, Minellie Erskine and Tina Liu played big ‘D’ while Kafira Gill scored 2 jump shots. Chelsi Noralez snatched 5 rebounds to score 3 points. To Yun-tse “Zoe” Mao then scored the final bucket for the 30-13 win.
3rd place went to Delille Academy who spanked the Cayo girls 36-15. Glenda Aranda led with 17 points as the Delille girls dominated 7-5 in the 1st quarter and 18-8 at the half. Elisia Nunez and Moesha Enriquez scored 4pts each, while Shirley Castillo added 3pts to open a 24-8 spread in the 3rd quarter. Leonie Nunez, Shirley Castillo, Clarisia Nunez and Sheyanne Castillo each tossed in a bucket for the 36-15 win.
San Pedro High School principal Emil Vasquez presented team trophies and individual medals to the champions, 2nd and 3rd place winners and the Most Valuable Player award to SCA’s Gilda Estrada.
