San Pedro Boys Win 4x NSSSA Softball Championship

8Belize City, March 18, 2017 The San Pedro High School boys won their 4th National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) softball championship at the Rogers Stadium over the weekend. San Pedro High School has now won 4 national championships this school year: boys’ volleyball, girls’ basketball and football, and now softball! In Game 1 Friday afternoon, Northern champs San Pedro High School boys hammered the Western champs, the Sacred Heart College boys, to a 13-3 win by mercy rule in 3 innings. SPHS pitcher Lester Gamez struck out 8 batters, walked 3, and gave up 1 hit; while the SPHS boys got 8 hits off SHC pitcher Kever Smith, who walked 5 batters. In Game 2 Friday night, the Central Zone champs Edward P. Yorke High School boys eliminated the Southern champs, the Independence High School boys: 17-7 by mercy rule in 3 innings. Pitcher Kristan Tillett struck out 4 batters, walked 3, and gave up 2 hits; while his teammates got 8 hits off IHS pitcher Jeffton Apolonio, who also walked 6 batters, and the IHS diamond made 7 errors. In Game 3, the consolation game for 3rd place on Saturday morning, the IHS boys walloped the Sacred Heart boys: 17-0 by mercy rule in 3 innings as pitcher Vince Garbutt struck out 7 batters and walked one. The IHS boys got 6 hits off Kever Smith’s pitching, he also walked 6 batters, and the SHC diamond made 2 errors. In Game 4, the championship final Saturday evening, the San Pedro boys won 9-2 over E.P. Yorke boys; as MVP pitcher Christian Orellano struck out 9 batters. The SPHS boys got 3 hits off pitcher Kristan Tillett, who also walked 10 batters and struck out 3. San Pedro High School has now won 4 national championships this school year: boys’ volleyball, girls’ basketball and football, and now softball! SOL Belize representative Lydia Cacho presented team trophies and medals to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the awards ceremony. Individual awards: Most Valuable Player - Christian Orellano - San Pedro High Most Wins – 3-way tie between Lester Gamez SPHS, Kristan Tillett - E.P. Yorke & Christian Orellano – SPHS (No trophy given) Most Strike outs - Lester Gamez of San Pedro High - 10 Best Batting Average - Jonathan Louriano - E.P. Yorke Most Runs Batted In (RBIs) - Isaul Coba - San Pedro High
